Walsingham, often referred to as “England’s Nazareth,” is home to one of the most significant Christian pilgrimage sites in the world. The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham dates back to 1061, when Richeldis de Faverches, inspired by a vision of the Virgin Mary, built a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth.
Today, the Walsingham Trust is responsible for maintaining and protecting this sacred site while supporting its operational needs across multiple buildings and locations. However, their legacy communications infrastructure was no longer fit for purpose.
Cumulus Business Solutions was engaged to deliver a modern, reliable, and scalable connectivity and telephony solution that would support the Trust’s operations across all sites.
The Challenge
The Walsingham Trust was operating on an outdated ISDN telephony system, which created significant operational limitations:
Difficult to add or manage handsets
Limited flexibility and poor call handling capabilities
No ability to transfer calls between different locations
Slow and unreliable internet connectivity
Poor WiFi coverage across sites
No centralised system to manage calls or communications
The Trust operates across 12 geographically separate locations within an ancient conservation village, making infrastructure upgrades particularly complex.
Additional constraints included:
Strict conservation regulations limiting installation options
Multiple buildings spread across the village
A requirement for 24/7 operational continuity
Minimal disruption during installation
The Trust needed a future-proof solution capable of delivering reliable connectivity, unified communications, and centralised management.
The Solution
Cumulus designed and implemented a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade combining modern connectivity and telephony technologies.
Connectivity Upgrade
To ensure reliable and high-performance internet access, we deployed:
FTTC broadband connectivity
Dedicated leased lines for guaranteed performance
WiFi hotspots installed across all sites
LAN-to-LAN intranet connecting all 12 locations
This created a robust and secure network foundation capable of supporting modern communication systems.
Telephony Modernisation
The legacy ISDN system was replaced with a fully managed VoIP phone system, delivering:
Centralised call management
Seamless call transfers between locations
Advanced call routing and handling
Scalable and flexible telephony capabilities
Simplified administration
Running over leased line infrastructure, the system provides guaranteed uptime and exceptional reliability.
Infrastructure Deployment
To support the new solution, Cumulus also installed:
Structured network cabling across all locations
New network sockets and connectivity points
Centralised network control infrastructure
All work was carefully planned and executed to ensure zero disruption to daily operations.
The Results
The new system delivered immediate and measurable benefits across the organisation.
Improved Usability - The Trust now benefits from a modern, intuitive telephony system that is easy to manage and supports advanced communication features.
Enhanced Reliability - Leased lines and enterprise-grade infrastructure provide guaranteed performance and robust connectivity across all sites.
Remote Working Capability - Staff can now remain connected from any location, with seamless call routing and centralised communications.
Increased Efficiency - With a dedicated account manager and centralised management, changes and support requests can be handled quickly and efficiently.
Cost Savings - The new VoIP system eliminates expensive legacy infrastructure while delivering long-term operational savings.
Client Testimonial
“Cumulus was there every step of the way. Their pricing was clear and on-target. They provided a detailed analysis and implemented the project seamlessly. Being based across 12 geographic locations in a conservation area made it a complex operation, but everything was completed without disrupting our day-to-day operation.”
Nick Clovis, Director of IT & Comms, Walsingham Trust
